About a month ago, I happened to see that an old friend was doing very well for himself in a different field of work.  I hadn’t seen or talked to him in 25 years, so we aren’t close.  I could take no responsibility for his success.  In seeing how his business has grown though, I have to admit that I was happy for him and if there was any way that I could help him out, I would certainly look to do that.  As I’ve mentioned in the past, I will often look at businesses outside of real estate for inspiration and also to model.  Perhaps you’ve heard about the “Law of attraction?”  It’s this idea that we can attract whatever we think into our own lives.  I am a real estate agent drawn to success.  It’s hard to believe that some people would actually be drawn to failure, but there’s no question that it happens all the time.

Why Are We Drawn To Success?

In looking at my successful friend, I started thinking about all the reasons that he would be defined as a success.  In this way, I hope to link success as a real estate agent with success in his field.

  1. He is the owner. One of the ways I see his success is that he owns the company.  With leadership comes great responsibility.  If he makes poor decisions, he can lose the company, and his workers might have difficulty finding new jobs quickly.  In real estate, independent real estate brokers are owners as well.  There is a tremendous amount of responsibility to your clients and to the agents that work with you.
  2. He has a good story. My friend started out working for an electrician with no designs of starting his own company.  Over the years, he got more experience and eventually started out on his own with a pickup truck.  Many years later, he has three company divisions, and still finds time to be involved with his customers.  As a real estate broker in St. Louis, I can relate to this.
  3. He takes time to talk to his customers. As successful as he is, he still has time to talk to his customers.  He doesn’t just sit in an office waiting for the phone to ring.  This is an exact parallel to real estate sales.  A lot of times you get an agent who has had a lot of success.  They leave the day to day and just focus on getting more leads at the expense of their existing clients.  Over time, those clients move on to other real estate agents because there’s too large of a gap between contacts.
  4. He’s committed to excellence. The particular field he is in isn’t new.  It’s been around for more than a hundred years.  This doesn’t stop him from continually assessing how he can do a better job for his customers.  Real estate sales are the same way.  I often ask what we can do to make the process better for our buyers and sellers.  There’s nothing new about the business but there are always ways to improve.

Success Across Industries

The weird thing about this is that I think he could come into real estate sales tomorrow and have a lot of success because of the things I mentioned above.  In real estate, we are seemingly always looking for that next shiny thing that is going to take our business to the next level.  If we would just concentrate on the basics that work across all forms of business, we’re likely to have more success.
