Thoughts:
1. How many people think that being a real estate agent is a “safe” profession? How many murders and violent incidents would have to happen to make you change your mind?
2. In this particular case, a former disgruntled tenant decided to take out his revenge on the agent…who wasn’t the owner and was showing the home. It had nothing to do with the agent.
3. There’s a special place in hell for an animal that shoots someone while they are working. I believe there should be stronger mandatory sentences for murder of people who are “on the clock.” This woman was out trying to make a living for her family…to be murdered in a case of mistaken identity is just wrong.
4. We often talk about preventative safety measures for real estate agents. These include
a. Telling family and friends where you are going and who you are meeting with
b. NEVER showing a property to a random stranger without pre-approvals.
c. Always pay attention to your surroundings.
But none of these things are going to keep some sicko who is stalking the house from murdering you if that’s what’s on their mind.
5. Evictions can be contentious issues..there’s no question. I once had an agent friend who got a call to show a rental. When he got there it was a former tenant who wanted to argue with the agent about a prior tenancy that the agent had nothing to do with.
6. This feeds into the review culture…so say this guy gets evicted from the house, and leaves a nasty review. He murders an agent just showing property….do you respect the bad review he gave of the rental? This is why I don’t put much stock in online reviews for real estate agents…especially those that deal with rentals. Yelp, for example, will allow tenants to rate real estate agents on rentals where they’ve been evicted. How reasonable is that?
7. What can be done? I have a very small YouTube channel. I try to get the word out there to the general public and real estate agents that this is an inherently dangerous business. We often work on our own, we’re often going to bad parts of town, and we’re often showing houses that are vacant.
